开皇八年冬，隋文帝杨坚下令大举伐陈。晋王杨广统筹诸军，杨素率水军从长江上游东下，牵制陈军江防；下游的贺若弼从广陵渡江，韩擒虎则由横江夜渡。隋军选择陈朝正月庆会、防务松弛之际行动，几路同时突破，而不是只靠一名将领潜入。贺若弼在钟山、白土冈一线击败陈军主力，韩擒虎攻取采石后直趋建康。陈后主仍在宫中，军报与命令被近臣阻隔，各部无法形成统一抵抗。韩擒虎所部先进入朱雀门，城中官军相继放下武器。陈后主与张丽华、孔贵人躲入一口枯井，隋军垂绳将他们拉出。这个细节见于正史，却不必拍成羞辱喜剧；它标志着一个朝廷已经失去最后的公开指挥空间。陈亡以后，隋军接收府库、图籍与州郡。自西晋末年长期分裂的南北，在589年重新统一。隋灭陈是多路战略、江防失效和陈朝政治失能共同造成的结果，不能缩写成“韩擒虎一夜一人灭国”。
