刘备去世后，蜀汉政权尚未稳定，南中多地相继反叛。牂柯太守朱褒拥郡起兵；益州郡大姓雍闿据郡不服，把太守张裔流放到孙吴；越巂夷王高定也脱离蜀汉。建兴三年春，诸葛亮决定亲率军队南下。正史本纪对战斗过程写得极简，只留下“南征四郡，四郡皆平”八个字，因此画面不能把后世传说当成确定战况。能够确认的是，这不是一场单点决战，而是一次跨越山地与河谷、处理多个叛乱中心的连续行动。到当年秋天，平定完成。蜀汉随后把原益州郡改为建宁郡，又从建宁、永昌分置云南郡，从建宁、牂柯分置兴古郡。军事行动的结果，被固定成新的郡界、户籍和驻治体系。十二月，诸葛亮返回成都。小说与民间叙事中的七擒孟获、火烧藤甲兵，不属于陈寿本纪写明的节点；本包只呈现多路平叛、归附与行政接管，不给任何现代族群套上古代叛军身份。
