宣和末年，宋金联合灭辽后很快反目。靖康元年，金军第一次逼近开封，李纲组织守城，金军议和后退。但宋廷没有重新建立稳定防线，主战、议和与割地命令反复变化，太原等北方据点又相继失守。冬天，金军第二次南下，两路会合包围开封。各地勤王军未能形成统一救援，城内粮食、燃料与军心逐日耗尽。闰十一月，开封外城被攻破。金军并没有立刻把一切变成一场街巷屠杀，而是控制宫城、索取金银、马匹、工匠与人口；宋廷官员被迫在城中搜括。靖康二年，徽宗赵佶、钦宗赵桓和大批宗室、官员、乐工、工匠及百姓被押往北方。北宋朝廷至此结束。靖康之难不是一夜间突然倒塌的城墙，它是燕云政策失败、边防失衡、命令摇摆和围城资源枯竭共同累积的结果。南逃的康王赵构随后建立南宋，宋朝的政治中心也从黄河流域转向江南。
