延熙十八年，姜维再次率军进入陇右，向狄道推进。魏国雍州刺史王经仓促迎战。魏方记载，王经在故关一带与蜀军交锋，退到洮水以西后遭到大败；蜀汉本纪则简洁地写作“与王经战于洮西，大破之”。姜维抓住魏军阵线不稳的时机，分队越过河谷，从正面和侧面压迫。王经部众失去秩序，只能退入狄道城。洮西成为蜀汉后期少见的大捷，但胜利并没有自动带来城池。姜维随即围攻狄道，城中粮食和士气都十分紧张。魏国征西将军陈泰率援军进入陇右，绕行到狄道东南高城岭一带，夜里多举烽火、鸣鼓角，让城内知道援军已经到达。王经军心恢复，姜维则面临外援与坚城的双重压力。最终他没有在狄道城下耗尽兵力，解除包围，退屯钟题。洮西说明蜀军仍能打出一场漂亮的野战，却也说明一次“大破”不足以改变国力与后勤的长期差距。八年以后，蜀汉灭亡。
